Can You Take Argan Oil on a Plane? Cabin vs Checked Luggage
Argan oil counts as a liquid at airport security — over 100 ml must go in checked luggage. How to pack a litre of argan oil safely, what about duty-free, and customs allowances at home.
Can you take argan oil on a plane?
Yes — but a litre of argan oil has to go in your checked luggage, not your hand luggage. At airport security, argan oil counts as a liquid. At most airports, including Moroccan airports, liquids in cabin bags are limited to containers of 100 ml or less, carried in a single clear bag. Anything bigger, like a 1 L bottle, goes in the hold.
Some airports with newer scanners have relaxed the liquids limit, but rules differ from airport to airport and change over time. If you’re connecting, the strictest airport on your route is the one that counts. Unless you’ve checked every airport on your trip, plan on the 100 ml rule.
Hand luggage vs checked luggage
| Hand luggage | Checked luggage | |
|---|---|---|
| Containers up to 100 ml | Yes, inside your clear liquids bag | Yes |
| 1 L or more | No | Yes, in personal quantities |
| Bought after security (duty-free) | Usually yes, in a sealed duty-free bag | — |
If you travel with hand luggage only, a 1 L container won’t come home with you unless you add a checked bag. One option is to decant a small amount into a 100 ml travel bottle for your cabin bag and pack the rest in a checked bag — or share a checked bag with a travel companion.
How to pack a litre of argan oil
Oil leaks are the real risk, not security. A few minutes of packing avoids an oily suitcase:
- Keep the original seal on until you’re home, and make sure the cap is screwed on tightly.
- Tape the cap with a strip of tape around the join.
- Double-bag it in two zip-lock or sturdy plastic bags.
- Pack it in the middle of your suitcase, wrapped in clothes, upright if you can — never in an outside pocket.
- Count the weight. A litre of oil weighs about 0.9 kg, so around 1 kg with its container; 5 L is close to 5 kg.
What about buying argan oil at the airport?
Liquids bought in shops after security can usually go in the cabin, in the sealed bag the shop gives you, with the receipt. If you have a connecting flight, keep the bag sealed until your final destination, as transfer security may otherwise confiscate it. Airport shops mostly sell small bottles, and prices are typically higher than in town.
Will customs at home ask about it?
For personal use, argan oil is an ordinary cosmetic. What matters is the value and quantity:
- EU: air travellers can bring goods worth up to €430 per person from outside the EU without paying VAT or duty. A litre of argan oil fits comfortably; 5 L or 10 L may take you over, and then you should declare it.
- Other countries have their own allowances — check your country’s customs website before you fly if you’re bringing back a large amount.
- Very large quantities can look like goods for resale rather than personal use, so keep your receipt.
